A Wish Unspoken

the candles
extinguish in a single breath

a wish unspoken
to kiss her
just once

to hold her
for one long
pristine kiss
your fingers
tangled in her hair
as thin trails of smoke
rise
from the candles

but no matter
how many times
you make that wish
no matter how many candles
you blow out

your eyes
will never meet her's
across the table
in that perfect way
when distance closes
between hearts
and eyes shut
as lips meet

some wishes
unspoken
remain ungranted
